A Visit with the Legendary Rubén Blades
Rubén Blades' music was the soundtrack to my youth. In every family get together, he was there. His songs are like short stories. Just take a listen to Pedro Navaja, Decisiones, Chica Plastica. They tell a vivid tale. When my editor Jesus Treviño from Latina asked me if I was interested in traveling to Mexico to visit the set of Fear the Walking Dead, I think I kind of scream/cursed. Not only was I going to meet a legend but I was going to meet him with zombies lurking around! It was a total dream come true.
If you don't know about Rubén Blades, the man has done it all: movies, Broadway, political activism. The short amount of time I spent with him in Mexico, I got to witness his dedication to his craft and see how everyone around him paid him respect. He's an OG. You have to. He is also the ultimate storyteller. There was always a group surrounding him, waiting to hear what happened next. We even talked about his book of poetry he intends to publish. "I'm going to be 68. You start thinking, well, how much time do I have and what can I do now with the time I have," he said. "I have all these things that I want to try."
My feature with Rubén Blades is in the August issue of Latina magazine. Pick it up if you haven't already.
